Insulation
Insulation is like a cozy, warm sweater that keeps your York County, PA and North Central MD area home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Paired with proper air sealing, improving your home’s insulation is the easiest and most cost-effective way to upgrade your home’s performance, comfort and energy efficiency. Our BPI certified technicians understand how insulation works in your home and can help determine where and how much insulation your home needs.
How Does Insulation Work?
Insulation works by preventing the transfer of heat between the outside and inside of your home. Its effectiveness in stopping heat is measured with an R-value. The higher the R-value, the better that insulation is at stopping heat transmission. Many homeowners in the Westminster, MD region use an energy audit conducted by our expert energy auditors to locate where insulation is missing or compacted, as well as where air leaks may be reducing insulation performance.
What Type of Insulation is Best?
There are many types of insulation available for residential use. Our insulation specialists have found that some insulation performs better in some locations in the house, while others proved a distinct price advantage. Most likely we’ll be using a couple of different types of insulation in your home’s installation. As an experienced insulation contractor, York Home Performance uses these types of insulation most frequently:
Spray Foam Insulation
Blown-In Fiberglass
FIberglass Batts
Blown-In Cellulose
Where is Insulation Applied?
Our insulation team will install insulation in the areas of the house that come in contact with the outside or unheated areas. These are some common locations:
Attic Insulation
Basement Insulation
Wall Insulation
Crawl Space Encapsulation
How Much Insulation is Required?
The amount of insulation required will vary depending on the location. Attic insulation needs to have the highest thermal resistance, around R-49 for new construction in our area. Exterior walls and basements have requirements of R-15 to R-20 or more. Each type of insulation has a different R-value per inch—some types of insulation work better than others depending on the space available. Our team will use scientific modeling and data from your home to determine the right amount of insulation you’ll need to qualify for energy efficiency rebates.
